The robots are coming, and they’ll be bearing googly eyes.

Marty, as it’s called, is a tall, gray robotic assistant that will be introduced to Giant Food Stores, a supermarket chain which operates in Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia and West Virginia.

The robots will be introduced in the coming months to 172 outlets, and will trundle around stores to identify hazards like spills, allowing staffers to spend more time serving customers.

According to The Washington Post, Marty uses a camera to scan the floor for hazards. Once identified, Marty will alert nearby customers by verbally telling them “caution, hazard detected,” then will send an alert through the store’s PA system. Read more…

The government says smartphones are too expensive

TwitterFacebook

It’s no secret that premium smartphones are selling for fatter and fatter stacks of cash these days. Now, the government is saying that’s a problem — but not for the reason you might think.

The Federal Trade Commission brought an antitrust suit against chip-maker Qualcomm in 2017, and it’s just now playing out in court. Across the entire market, smartphones might be more affordable if Qualcomm hadn’t demanded such a sizable cut of manufacturer revenue as a royalty for using its tech. Read more…

LG, the company behind the mind-bendingly cool rollable television, is looking to bring the same flexible display tech to smartphones, according to one of the company’s top executives.

The CTO of the Korean electronics company confirmed in an interview with Tom’s Guide that the company is experimenting with rollable and foldable phones.

“We are exploring many different form factors for phones, including foldable and rollable,” LG CTO IP Park said.

“Because display technology has grown so much that it can make it into very flexible form factors. And with 5G, if the market requires much bigger screens, we’ll need to fold it or roll it. So we’ll explore.” Read more…
